31 Weeks Old
Dear Myles,
Last night, I went to sleep shirtless because we let the laundry pile up. We've weaned you off the night feed, but sometimes you relapse.
When you began fussing, I picked you up and carried you to the living room to give your mother some rest. She had just come back to bed from her 4 am pumping session.
They say a shark can smell blood from a quarter of a mile away, and a baby can smell their mother’s milk up to 2 feet away.1 But to be this close to a chest with no milk is like a vault with no cash—just flat, hard, and full of hair. You weren’t too pleased.
I don’t know if you’re just older now, but you didn’t cry. No, instead, you began slapping my chest with the gusto of a wrestler in the corner of a ring.
When I tried to cover myself with the nearest throw on the couch, you pushed it aside and slapped me even harder. This time, like a Caribbean man who just won a domino game—only this time, it was 20 games, a slap for everyone. This can’t be what they meant by skin to skin..
If you could form words, I imagine between each slap on my bare chest you’d say,
"Take.
Me.
To.
The
Milk."
I want to lie and say I didn’t wince a little. I never knew the hand of a seventh-month-old could be so heavy, so strong.
That morning, I did push-ups, and just in case, I also did laundry.
Love,
Daddy
P.S: When I told your mother this story in the morning, she laughed and said, “Now you know a little bit of what I go through.” Son, please be gentle to the boobs.
